One of the most crucial parts in the making of an episode of Tailgate Fan is the edit.
For starters, it’s exhausting…
Especially when you have to stay up all night to complete it. The good news is that you don’t have to take your clothes off before going to bed… Mainly because there’s no bed. But, to make an episode tight enough to bounce a quarter off, the edit is absolutely fundamental… emphasis on the FUN!
Don’t flip out… The official ‘Pool Rules’ said nothing about poolside editing! Although, come to think of it, there might have been something about diving.
Anyway, the first step after wrapping a shoot is ‘The Transfer.’ While I’m getting out of some restankulous costume, Alan, the director and editor, is transferring the footage to the computer… Then we start ‘Edit-gating!’
That’s right… the footage is in the can… so we get to crack one!
Next step is ‘The Sort,’ where yours truly sorts thru the footage we shot that day. Which is kind of weird… Nothing like watching a replay of the last four hours of your life. Now, depending on how fast we have to turn the episode around, the sort can happen in any number of places…
Like… in costume at the airport.
Or at a tiny desk at my grandma’s house.
…Or even in the car on a drive from Green Bay to Milwaukee without taking off the unitard and face paint I was wearing. You should have seen the look on the concierge’s face when we got to that hotel!
Then, the Edit Fairy takes over…
Sprinkling his magic editing dust over everything he touches, even while in a cab!
