Tim Janus is a 37-year-old from New York City’s East Village who works professionally as a pizza chef. However, when he bellies up to the competitive eating table, piled high, Janus becomes Eater X, a painted-faced trencherman who can take down more food than your family serves at Thanksgiving.
Eater X was named IFOCE’s 2004 Rookie of the Year a decade ago, and his career hasn’t slowed down. Currently ranked the third best competitive eater in the world, Eater X is a force to be reckoned with, especially if you stand between him and glory. In 2009, in the qualifying match for the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, he became the third person on record to break the 50-hot dog barrier. Last year, Janus attempted to get legally drunk (.08 blood alcohol level) on non-alcoholic beer. He would’ve been the first, had he succeeded. In 2012, the World Burping Federation crowned Janus the reigning king of burping for his 18.1-second belch. Eater X competes in an average of 15 different eating competitions each year.
His most recent accomplishments include a third-place finish at the RP Funding World Chili Eating Challenge in Orlando, Florida a couple months ago and a second-place finish at the Western Days Festival World Tamale Eating Championship in Lewisville, Texas last September. His world records run the culinary gamut from fried pork rinds to tiramisu.
In recent years, competitive eating has turned its focus to how much someone can consume in a short amount of time rather than the total mass consumed. This bothers Janus who has said, “I consider myself to be a massive eater, a capacity eater, and I wish we had more contests that measured that.”
He’s been featured on MTV’s reality series True Life and in National Geographic’s documentary “The Science of Speed Eating.” He’s also competed on game shows such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Cash Cab. Video gamers might have seen Eater X as a character option in Major League Eating: the Game.
Interestingly enough, Janus lives with fellow competitive eater Jason “Crazy Legs” Conti, who he originally met at a corned beef and cabbage competition. The two call their apartment Coleman’s Bar & Grill.
To truly understand this competitor, one must only read this quote that Eater X shared in an interview, “I’d eat anything. One of my goals is to eat everything in the world. I’d eat a roll of pennies. I hope we make contact with beings from other planets. I’d eat an alien. If we could raise dinosaurs, I’d sign up to eat those.”
