Warm beer at a tailgate is almost as bad as no beer… almost. Tailgate Fan knows that for your tailgate to be hot, your beer needs to be cold. And for that you need a cooler, one that you can toss the bottles and cans into and forget about till you want one. It’s an easy job, but an important one that can’t be entrusted to just any cooler.
Once upon a time, a cooler required ice. But that’s no longer the case. Just as there are all kinds of tailgate parties, there are all kinds of coolers to choose from. Here are some of our favorites:

Freezable Chill It 6-Pack Bag ($17)
Now this is a six-pack holder to love: carrying handles and ample space for six bottles or cans. Every side of the bag has a freezing cells, as does the divider inside. A couple hours in the fridge is all you need to cool down the bag. And then let it cool that six-pack on the way to the tailgate. There’s even room to pack fruits or veggies, if you like that sort of thing.
It may look like a mini-fridge, but the 40-quart interior means you can load up to 44 cans and still have room for a few snack bags. Plug the Coleman PowerChill into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter or, if available, a standard outlet. It keeps things 40 degrees cooler than the temperature outside. Use it standing up or like a chest; the door can open up on either side. Molded handles allow for easy carrying.
And then there’s the Coleman 100-Quart Xtreme cooler, for when you’re really not playing around. This one has room for up to 130 cans inside. With a heavy-duty stainless steel construction, it can take up to five days of 90 degree heat without breaking a sweat. The Xtreme comes with built-in can holders and a drain for cleaning it out later. The UV guard coating keeps the white exterior from yellowing, and the antimicrobial lining fights off those unwanted bugs you can’t see. There are even over-sized handles for when you’ve got to move it.
The Koolatron Travel Cooler comes with 28 quarts worth of space inside to accommodate up to 34 cans or a whole passel of sandwiches and cold cuts. But there’s also room on the outside for holding your cell phone, not to mention a couple of open brews. To keep things cool, plug the Koolatron into a cigarette lighter or AC outlet and run the motor. The interior will cool down to 30 degrees below the surrounding temperature.
